The U.S. administration abruptly stepped into AI regulation on Friday, issuing an export-control order to U.S.-based Anthropic to bar foreign nationals from using “Fable 5,” the company’s most powerful AI model. Anthropic responded by pulling Fable 5 access for all customers and arguing the government’s move, which cited national security, was too sudden and opaque. Immediate reactions included disbelief and anger from users who had just started testing Fable 5 upon its release three days prior. Fable 5 remains offline, while cybersecurity leaders push back in public over the government’s intervention.
Deepfakes
Warning signals are blaring on the serious consequences of AI “deepfakes” among young people. AI has made it easy to generate fake images of real people that are indistinguishable from real life. Although most mainstream AI tools block these features, tech-savvy teens can still access them — redefining what bullying and sexual harassment mean in schools and communities.

The Initial Report is written and edited by Grant Morgan, a former prosecutor who tried high-level felonies and assisted in complex investigations before turning his attention to how artificial intelligence is reshaping the day-to-day work of American prosecutors. The Initial Report tracks the tools, court rulings, and enforcement actions shaping that work.
